My German Shepherd is almost 14 years old. Her veterinarian…

Customer Question
Hello. My German Shepherd is...
Hello. My German Shepherd is almost 14 years old. Her veterinarian diagnosed brain tumor last year. At time of diagnosis, she was not ambulatory enough to take to the hospital or vet office so no MRI. Diagnosis was based on collateral symptoms by vet who visited her at home. (She had hip dysplasia that appears independent from her tumor.) She had a seizure last year which led to the diagnosis of a brain tumor. Her blood was analyzed by the same vet and the vet said blood work also indicated a tumor. Plus she sufferd from incontinence, her hind legs do not work well and she cannot hear and her sight appears impaired due to cataracts. She walks around best she can. Her appetite is excellent. She drinks a great deal of water. She has a great attitude. She does not appear to be in pain to me. She is not crying or whimpering. The vet prescribed and she is on phenobarbital. She's been on this medication for 1 year now since her diagnosis. She has been ths same way for the past year since her diagnosis of brain tumor. Buf She's been having seizures - now 2 per month. Short seizures. 6 months ago she suffered from vertigo. I thought it was a stroke but the vet who saw her at home said it was vertigo and he was right. Other than that she has consistently been the same. Incontinent, can't hear or see very well due the cataracs, her hind legs don't work well due to hip dysplasia. She drinks a great deal of water, her appetite is great and her attitude is great. she does not appear to be in pain to me. However this morning she exhibited signs of vertigo again. I don't know if it is vertigo or not. I don't know if her brain tumor is worsening or she just has vertigo. How will I know if a brain tumor is worsening? Since this morning when she exhibited vertigo symptoms, she continues to have a great appetite and drinks a lot of water. She has difficulty finding her food bowl now. Her head is tilting to the left. She cannot get up without falling down. Same as vertigo. She is not whimpering but appears very uncomfortable. I don't know if her brain tumor is getting worse or if it's Vertigo. How can I tell? Should I wait another 24 hours to see if it resolves? Or should I call the vet now? Thank you so much for your help.

Almost 14 is impressive! Sounds like she's on appropriate medicines for the seizures, but that the dose may need to be increased if she's having two seizures a month. The goal is to have no more seizures than one every 1-2 months, so I'd recommend you talk to your vet about a dose increase. With regards ***** ***** some telling signs are head tilt and abnormal eye movement. Usually the eyes are moving back and forth and a pendulous way. Sometimes in an up and down or circular manner as well. Vertigo most of the time is an idiopathic origin, meaning we don't don't know why. But it can be due to a brain tumor as well. An episone can last anywhere from a few minutes to a week or more. I'd give it a day, but if she's not eating well, vomiting, or can't walk then you'll need to see a vet.

I like non-drowsy dramamine in these cases (meclizine). I'd give a whole tablet once a day, plus or minus some pepcid AC to settle her stomach (20mg). I'm sorry Putik is dealing with this, but I'm glad sh'e getting the help she needs from you. Let me know if Ican help in any other way. Kindly consider rating my answer.
