I have a ~9 year old miniature Schnauzer who has Megaesophagus.
I've done a lot of research over the past year (since I've known about it) and found this chair called the Bailey's Chair, which works great.
But still, almost everyday my dog will regurgitate some portion of his food -- although it's a lot less than it was before I had the chair.
I'm wondering if there is anything else that I can do to minimize it even further? What sort of things will prevent this?
How is Megaesophagus usually treated?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I'm glad you've done so much for Pete! I assume he had bloodwork done previously, as treating any underlying cause would help, but most of the time it's idiopathic, meaning we have no good reason. The chair is awesome...so glad you got that. Make sure he stays in it for 10-15 after meals. If he's not on medicine I'd recommend metoclopramide three times daily 1/2 hour before meals to help with GI motility. Some dogs do better with wet food, others with dry food....that's a little trial and error. I'd say most do better with wet.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Making the food into a slurry may help as well. Sounds like you're doing what you can! But definitely add on metoclopramide if he's not on that. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Kindly consider rating my answer; you can always follow up with questions after rating.

we had bloodwork done and they told me everything was functioning properly. They didn't prescribe him with anything because they just said it's often normal for dogs esophagus to weaken with age, so it was sort of up to me to find something to help with it. I do grind up his food into powder and mix it with water to make it into a slurry -- that definitely helps a lot.
I will look into metoclopramide though! What are some typical doses for a dog about 15-20 pounds? Also would this be something I would need to pick up through a vet, or could I purchase this at online or at a pharmacy?

Would there be any side effects to look out for?

It is a prescription, so you'd have to get it through a vet. I believe it comes in 10mg tabs (maybe 5mg and 20mg too)...for his size he'd take 2.5mg - 5mg three times a day. Bravo to you for being so proactive. Surprised that was your vet's attitude. Side effects would be diarrhea due to gut motility. It's a titration...have to find the dose that works for him.
