18 wk old puppy ran into a glass door - seemed fine but is now throwing up all his food and water 7 hrs later

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the puppy eat anything unusual?

Not that I know of

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

Bear - miniature poodle puppy - 6.5 lbs

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the puppy?

I have prednisone on hand - should I give it to him - ? But he is not keeping anything down

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Bear has been vomiting about 7 hours after running into a glass door. I am sorry to hear about what is happening. Does Bear have any history of upset stomach such as vomiting or loose stool?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

At 16 wks after his last puppy shot he had some loose stools but only lasted a couple of days - every thing normal up until a few hrs ago
Customer reply replied 5 months ago
Hello ?

Ok, thank you. This sounds like it could be a symptom of a concussion depending on the impact with the door. You will want to monitor closely any neurological changes such as different sized pupils, stumbling gait, head tilt, etc. You can treat nausea with an over-the-counter medication like Pepcid. The dose for a 6.5 lb dog is 2.5 mg (i.e. 1/4 tablet) every 12 hours. If vomiting continues tomorrow then he should be seen by a veterinarian.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

It does not sound like there is much of a known history of intestinal issues that could cause the vomiting, and the treatment would be the same for now. The main thing for concussion treatment is to monitor for neurological changes.

He is just resting quietly now, is it ok to let him sleep for the night ?

Yes, it is OK to let him rest if he is sleeping. If he seems to have trouble finding rest or appearing nauseous then go ahead and try the Pepcid. You may also want to consider having someone nearby him tonight to monitor for possible seizures. It is an unlikely event, but good to catch it if possible in order to move him on his side and keep his airway open.

What is the usual outcome for such an event ?

The usual outcome is a full recovery with no neurological issues. It is just something to monitor for the next 24 hours. No need to monitor beyond that.
