Hello,

I'm Dr. Jo and I'm here to help you with your question about your little chiweenie and the requip/ropinrol. Is your dog otherwise healthy and on no other medications?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Jo, Dog Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

While I await your reply, I will let you know that you are not alone. Many dogs (many times little dogs) have accidentally ingested this particular medication. It can cause low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, and a racing heartbeat. The effects usually take about 24 hours to wear off.

If your dog is otherwise healthy, the best plan is to induce vomiting. The safest way to do that is to get him to a veterinary emergency center right away. It's important to do this as quickly as possible.

If that is not an option, you can attempt to induce vomiting at home with hydrogen peroxide. Please be advised, however, this is not without risk and your peroxide must be FRESH. Additionally, using too much peroxide can cause severe, life-threatening injuries.

The dose of hydrogen peroxide for a 7-pound dog is 7ml, or a little more than a teaspoon. This is administered by mouth. Walk him around a bit after administration to encourage vomiting. If he does not vomit after ten minutes, you may repeat the dose ONE time only.

Here is a link to an article that explains inducing vomiting in more detail. Please remember time is of the essence.
