Yellow lab, 10 1/2...

Yellow lab, 10 1/2 female has twice in past week vomited her undigested kibble dinner 2 1/2 hours or more after dinner time. She has done in the past right after eating, so I put rock in her dish and water on her food. What might be going on and is there anything I might do short term until I can get her to et tomorrow?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

She has been eating same kibble for years. She chews marrow bones regularly, just the marrow and tissue, not the actual bone. She had one just before she barfed. Am really curious why her food was totally undigested after so long. Yes, it was a mess, mucousy. Previous one had more bile in it.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

Bhuie. She's 10 1/2

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Bhuie?

She is showing her age, but is a high energy dog, not quite as fit as she has been. Breathing is a bit more labored when running. She is very game and driven.

She's between 72 and 75. She had anaplasmosis last fall. Has fatty tumors. Up to date on vaccs. Her anal glands get blocked. Otherwise all's good.

Can't do the phone thing, btw

Friend, when we see vomiting of undigested food it is called "regurgitation" as the food has not been digested. Possible causes could be esophagus disorders (megaesophagus, strictures, parasites), gastritis, tumors or even part of a systemic disease. Unfortunately, on history alone, it will be difficult to determine the exact underlying cause, I am sorry. Your dog will need a hands-on examination by a veterinarian and x-rays as an initial screening test. In the meantime, this is what you can do:

1- Do not give things like Pepto Bismol or Imodium. Start her on Pepcid AC (famotidine) 20mg tablet every 12 hours for the next 2-3 days. You can buy Pepcid AC over the counter in any pharmacy.

2- No food or water for 6-8 hours. Need to give her gastrointestinal tract time to rest.

3- After 6-8 hours offer a small amount of water. Wait half hour, if no vomiting, offer a small amount of rice (50%) and boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (50%) 4-6 times a day. Keep on this diet for several days then wean into regular diet.

Note: When you feed her raise her eating dish on a small stool to force her to raise her head when she is eating.

4- Follow up with your family veterinarian for a hands on examination.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service - I hope I've provided the information you were seeking, if you feel you have received anything less, please reply back as I am happy to address follow-up questions. Kindly rate me when you are done.
