I have a 15...

I have a 15 y/o mini Labradoodle who was diagnosed with tracheal collapse @9 mos. ago. He responded well to the treatment, but for the last couple of weeks the honking/vomiting sound has returned to the point of waking me up at night and now he coughs during the day as well. A week or two before this came back, he started urinating in the house even when I'm home. I put a diaper on him now when I leave the house. I know he's had a good, long life, but I'm struggling with knowing when it's time to let him go. Is the tracheal collapse painful for him? His appetite is good and he can still run around. Am I being selfish?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

Is that question for me?

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

Eddie and he's 15.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Eddie?

I think I explained it all.

Hi

Dr. Paul Brazzell here

Have they done chest radiographs?

Weight loss?

Exercise intolerance?

Heart murmur?

Paul

No radiographs. He’s lost about 6 lbs since the New Year. He doesn’t do well on walks. He roams around the yard at his own pace. Testing isn’t affordable for me as I have another dog who is not well also

I am worried that we are dealing with congestive heart failure and not just the trachea problem

I have to recommend a recheck and at least one chest radiograph

They will be able to give you medications that will clear up the cough very quickly

He's been taking hydrocodone-homatropine 5-1.5, one tablet every 12 hours for 4-5 months now. I've also been giving him Throat Gold from Pet Wellbeing.

Okay

None of those will help his heart

He should be rechecked and his heart evaluated
