Customer Question
Our new puppy has...

Our new puppy has puked about 4 times yesterday..first had food in it and then just yellow watery puke...also keeps hiccuping. When I am cuddling with him I can feel his stomach gurgling..he is pooping regular poops

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the puppy eat anything unusual?

Not that we know of..we have checked every where in the house. When we first brought him home from the breeder I fed him some treats-milkbones and he got sick. We took him to the vet to get a checkup and I told her he puked a few times. She did not seem concerned

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the puppy?

We ran out of the breeder food and bought puppy food same brand different kind. He eat one meal and then puked several times, this am he would not eat or drink any water

It sounds like the diet change and stress from moving into a new home may be the culprit here. Both of those things can upset the GI tract and cause some nausea.

After vomiting, I like to give them 4-6 hours with no food or water. I would also try a dose of Pepcid (Famotidine). The dose in dogs is 0.25 mg per lb body weight. If they stop vomiting, then I'll give a bland diet of chicken/ rice or hamburger/ rice every 4-8 hours for 2-3 days. As long as they're keeping stuff down, then I'll wean them back to their normal diet.

If the vomiting continues despite that therapy, then I would get another exam and potentially x-rays to rule out an obstructions. If bloody diarrhea develops, then I would also consider Parvo Virus and run that test.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Can you use tums?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gary, Dog Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Tums is more of a calcium supplement in dogs.

Maalox or Mylanta would be alternatives that you could use. In a puppy, 1/2 teaspoon 2-3 times daily is fine.
