My dog, 2 years old, was limping on Rt. hind leg 3 days ago. Yesterday she limped on Right hind leg and occasionally on Left. She walks around slowly and only when called. Apparently in pain. No noticeable swelling. What do you think?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

Looked and felt but found nothing.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Ginger. She is part Lab and part Chow.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Ginger?

She is neutered, somewhat overweight.

Hello. My name is ***** ***** I am a licensed veterinarian. Do you know if Ginger has a fever? Depending on which part of the country you live in this shifting leg lameness could be a sign of Lyme disease. This is a tick transmitted disease.

We live in Central Texas. Ginger has no fleas or ticks--never has, at least that we have seen. Does not feel warm when petted but have not taken her temperature.

Okay, thank you! Well then it is possible she has sustained a soft tissue injury. Since it is both of her hind limbs that are bother her the most common hindlimb injury would be a torn ACL in the knee (in dogs this ligament is called the cranial cruciate ligament). A dog with a torn ACL can be mildly lame to non-weight bearing lame. It mostly depends on if the ligament is partially or completely torn. A torn ACL is easy to diagnose based on palpation of the knee joint. But, a vet has to do this knee palpation to diagnose it. So I would recommend getting Ginger in to see her vet this week. Until then, I would recommend you keep her as rested as possible. No running, jumping, playing, going on and off of furniture or stairs until she has her physical exam with her vet. She can be taken outside for potty breaks while on a leash only, then right back in the house. No free roaming the yard during this time.

I really do not recommend giving her any over the counter pain medications as aspirin can cause more harm than good when given to a dog.
