Bella is almost 16...

Bella is almost 16. In the last 5 days she will eat but an hour or 2 later throws up. She willingly goes outside and acts like she is going to poop but little if anything comes out. She drinks, walks fine, responds when asked to go potty, and will eat her treats. I have tried giving her a spoonful of pumpkin and she takes it but I don't know if that is what I should try.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

No just her usual dog food. Have not seen anything unusual in her throw up.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Bella

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Bella?

She is 15 years old.

but it is usually after she has thrown up the food and then it is watery.
Usually 30 to 35lbs. I would guess she is closer to 26.
No pre existing conditions

Is she holding the water down?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Friend, when a dog is vomiting food this is called regurgitation because the food has not been digested. This can be caused by many different medical conditions. I will not be able to pinpoint the exact underlying cause without a hands-on examination and some testing, I am sorry. But, common causes are esophagus disorders (megaesophagus, strictures, etc.), ingestion of a foreign body, gastritis, or even part of a systemic disease, etc. to name a few causes. To determine the exact underlying cause Bella will need to have a hands-on examination by a veterinarian, x-rays and blood work as an initial screening test. Treatment will be based on exam and test results. In the meantime, this is what you can do:

1- Do not give things like Pepto Bismol or Imodium. Start her on Pepcid AC (famotidine) 10mg 1/2 tablet every 12 hours. You can buy Pepcid AC over the counter in any pharmacy.

2- No food or water for 5-6 hours. Need to give her gastrointestinal tract time to rest.

3- After 5-6 hours offer a small amount of water. Wait half hour, if no vomiting, offer a small amount of rice (50%) and boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (50%) 4-6 times a day.

Note: Raise her eating dish on to a small stool to force her to raise her head when she is eating.

4- Follow up with your family veterinarian for a hands on examination.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service - I hope I've provided the information you were seeking, if you feel you have received anything less, please reply back as I am happy to address follow-up questions. Kindly rate me when you are done.
