Customer Question
My dog has had...

My dog has had diarrhoea for three days now. On day two he had about six bowel movements and they were all very loose and yellow with mucous and some fresh blood. I took him to the vet and he recommended to deworm him and Start a bland diet. I gave him Drontal and started him on chicken breast fat free and rice. Now it’s day three and he had 3 bowel movements which were again very soft and yellow with te last one tonight being quite orange. Is this normal? How long for the bland diet to work? He’s his normal happy bright self and otherwise seems fine! Thank you in advance!!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

Patch is a bulldog boxer cross and he is 7.5. He has had chronic prostatitis 6 months back for which he has had surgery. Vet checked his prostate yesterday and said was fine

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Patch?

That’s all I can think of

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I'm sorry to hear of this with Patch. While presumptive worming and a bland diet are reasonable presumptive therapy for such a dog, if you're seeing continued evidence of a large bowel diarrhea it would be prudent to investigate causes of such a diarrhea at this time. This is done with diagnostics in the form of blood, urine, and feces testing. A gastrointestinal panel performed by Patch's vet's reference laboratory is most cost-effective for you. Additional testing might be recommended in order to test for GI pathogens such as Clostridia, Campylobacter, and Salmonella. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Thank you for your response. How long does diarrhoea normally take to clear up in a dog? Is it normal for a dog to experience worsening symptoms following deworming? I ask this becasue his current vet is taking the wait and see approach as Patch is still bright and happy and eating.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Simple diarrheas such as those caused by a dietary indiscretion are expected to abate within 72 hours. No, a positive response to deworming is expected - usually within 36 hours. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
