My 15 year old 6 lb Maltese just ate half a chocolate bar!

Customer Question
My 15 year old...

My 15 year old 6 lb Maltese just ate half a chocolate bar! What do I do?!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name?

Suge (like the rapper).

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

He was a rescue, has no teeth, was cryptorchid and had a cancerous tumor on his neck when I got him last May. He’s well nourished but has significant muscle wasting at this point and is all bones.

1- How many ounces was the bar?

2- Type of chocolate (milk, dark, etc.)?

3- How long has it been since he ate it?

4- Do you have hydrogen peroxide 3%?

He ate exactly 1/2 of a 1.5 plz Butterfinger peanut butter cup. It was a two piece bar and he ate one piece. I have no idea how long ago it was, but it would have been some time between midnight and 6 am. I do have hydrogen peroxide.
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
He’s exhibiting no symptoms. I just know he’s not supposed to eat chocolate. He eats any and everything I have to be so careful. His prior owners must have fed him table scraps. I have him on a measured diet if 4oz royal canine small breed wet food, joint supplement, probiotics and omegas
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
3oz not 4 oz.

I am sorry, but, giving me time will not help me as we can be in different time zones, how many hours since he ate it?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I don’t know exactly but could be as soon as within the past hour, to some time after midnight. So within the past 1 to 6 hours. He was sleeping with me most of the night and he’s asymptomatic so I feel like it was this morning.

I could take him to the vet, but I’m having oral surgery and can’t get to the vet before 11am (4 hours from now). I will most definitely take him but do I have time? I do t want to allow organ system failure because I needed a root canal.

Friend, chocolate toxicity and symptoms are very dose dependent. Symptoms can range from gastrointestinal symptoms to life threatening seizures or cardiac arrhythmias. Ideally, we like to induce vomiting within 1-2 hours of ingestion. The fact that we do not know exactly the time of ingestion I would try to make him vomit. This is what you can do:

1- To induce vomiting give 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide orally.

2- Allow him to walk for a minute and move his belly to mix stomach content with peroxide. If he does not vomit within 5-10 minutes, repeat it again. Can give a total of 3 times 5-10 minutes apart.

3- If he does not vomit after the 3rd dose or you do not see the chocolate in the vomit, observe him for the next 24 hours. If he becomes hyperactive, muscle tremors, changes in respiration, etc. have him checked immediately by ER veterinarian, these are symptoms that could progress to life threatening seizures or cardiac arrhythmias. If no symptoms after 24 hours (especially the first 12 hours) unlikely for any symptoms to develop.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service it is how I get compensated. See you again soon!
