I'm not sure what my dog , Roscoe (14 month old pit bull), had eaten. Early Monday he started throwing up. Started as food, and ended as yellow fluid. He drank water through the day and held it down. 24 hours had passed since he had last thrown up, and he was still refusing food and now water. I took him to the vet. He seemed in well spirits and we decided fluids under the skin. Just a few hours later he was eating! He ate twice that day (chicken and rice) which was now Wednesday, and ate small amounts of dog food on Thursday at feeding times. Friday he wouldn't eat anything. Today we went back to the vet, and got Xrays. There are dark spots in his intestines but obviously doesn't show what he ate. Both the vet and my husband believed it could be the yellow foam from our ottoman that he had chewed. They gave him more fluid under the skin to help him get hydrated and hopefully pass this. They say we need to decide by Monday to do surgery if he hasn't passed it....what is your thought on this?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Oh Roscoe! If by Monday there is still evidence of material in his stomach despite not eating, I'd recommend surgery. If you're hesitant you could talk to your vet about a barium study, where he drinks a liquid that shows up on xray, then take serial xrays as it goes through the gut to highlight an obstruction. But if he really hasn't eaten any food and there's material in his stomach, then there's obviously a problem. If he starts eating well with no vomiting, then I think monitoring is fine. Hope he does well...and that he stops chewing on things he shouldn't! Let me know if I can help with anything else. Kindly consider rating my answer; you can always get back to me with questions and updates after rating.
