Brand new, 6-week-old yorkshire terrier puppy with abnormal stools

Customer's question: The six-week-old yorkie we just picked up has had two really loose, light-colored, blood tinged stools. He just got his first set of shots and was dewormed yesterday. His stools were normal a few hours ago but now that we've driven him home, he's having this problem. What should we do?

Veterinarian's answer: Vomiting and diarrhea are always worrisome in very young puppies, and it's even more concerning when you've just brought home a new puppy, something that's stressful for everyone involved. It's very common for puppies to respond with diarrhea to stressful situations like this, whether it's the vaccination, deworming, the car ride, or leaving his family. Any type of diet change can trigger abnormal stools, too. As long as there are no other signs of illness, it's okay to give him some time to adapt and wait to see if the problem resolves before seeking veterinary attention. In the meantime, avoid the temptation to offer anything new or unusual to drink.

Resolved Question:

Well hopefully nothin. we just picked up the Yorkshire terrier from the seller, He is 6 weeks old. He is drinking water. No vomitting, however he has pooped twice very looose, it is very very light yellow almost white but blood tinged, First shots and worming yesterday, he acts fine, she said his poop was hard and normal at her house. This was an hour after we got him

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the Yorkshire Terrier eat anything unusual?

No

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the Yorkshire Terrier's name?

Hes 6 weeks old she had him in her house w his littermates

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the Yorkshire Terrier?

No I just got him 3 hours ago and she said he was fine

hello

I want to let you know that this type of loose stool following a stressful event (like the car ride home and being separated from his family) is NOT alarming. It's actually very common.

As long as there aren't any other signs of illness, I wouldn't worry about it.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Are you able to see what I am typing?

I've written in two responses after you said, "Is that it?"

at first but then I saw it Thanksyou

Oh, good.

That's a relief.

Just give him lots of opportunity to rest and make this big adjustment.

ok thank you

It's also really important to avoid the temptation to give him anything different to eat than what he's been used to. Keeping his food the same will help him better cope with all the other changes.
