Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I am sorry to hear your dog is having this problem.

Does this seem to be associated with anything specific: certain foods, being kenneled, going on holiday/vacation, etc?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

There are a few things that can be done depending on what your veterinarian has done already. These include the following:
1) fecal/stool test to rule out any Gi parasites. These are unlikely if this happens only once a year.

2) Make sure to feed the same diet long term to avoid GI upset: it sounds like you are doing this already.

3) Have bloodwork checked by your vet to rule out any issue with absorption in the GI tract. This is a simple blood draw and the tests typically take a few days to get back.

4) add a probiotic powder such as fortiflora to the diet. This can be done long term or given 2 weeks at a time. Here is a link: http://amzn.to/2CJm3SZ

5) Add fiber powder to the diet. This can also be done long term or given as needed for 7 days. Typically you want to add about 1 tablespoon twice daily to the diet. You can purchase over the counter fiber powder which works well. This is the one we use: http://amzn.to/2HPGrW6

I generally recommend avoiding pepto bismol as it can sometimes cause issues due to the NSAIDs that are in the medication. Some dogs can have GI upset from it or can have damage to their stomach from the medication.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Most loose stool is very responsive to fiber, so that +/- the probiotics is usually going to be the best way to go.
