Customer Question
10 year old female...

10 year old female miniature schnauzer is lethargic, drank water this morning and ate some chicken that I gave to her this evening. Laying around a lot, acts like she doesn't want to get up. Went outside twice and pottied today. She's up and walking around after eating chicken, but won't touch her dog food or water. Had a bad seizure Mon. night and was overnight the emergency vet clinic with an IV. Hasn't had a seizure since. Vet didn't know the cause. I'm now concerned about her lethargy today. What do I do?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

I've been feeding her Diamond Natural dog food for two months. She has become less active, sleeps more and now has respiratory allergies since being on this food. Prior to this, she was on Blue Buffalo chicken and rice food for 3 years. She turned up her nose one day and would not eat it, so that's when I switched to the Diamond dog food. Could the source of my dog's condition be the dog food? What should I be feeding her?

I am sorry to hear you are worried about your Schnauzer. Was she tested for pancreatitis? That is fairly common in her breed, and age. Pancreatitis can be associated with a high fat diet, diet change, etc.

Customer reply replied 4 months ago
No, she has not been tested for that.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

If she continues to not eat, that is something I would do.

Can the change in food cause lethargy and not eating?
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Pancreatitis can cause these symptoms. Pancreatitis may or may not be related to the diet.
