Diagnosed with pancreatitis. 12 yr old chihuahua. 3 days with antibiotics. Fluid under skin. And anti nausea med. drinks water but no food yet

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the Chihuahua eat anything unusual?

We fed with left over turkey and gravy probably too much fat

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the Chihuahua's name?

Maverick

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Maverick?

He is still very lethargic and won’t eat.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Maverick, please?

He is still not eating and now not drinking water. Has a burping thing thing every 15 minutes so stomach still upset.
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
We are probably going to do an ultra sound to see what else might be happening

Thank you for the additional information. Unless an ultrasound reveals a pancreatic abscess, antibiotics aren't needed. In the great majority of cases, pancreatitis is a sterile disease in dogs. Rather than the antibiotic, I would initiate treatment with an over the counter antacid such as famotidine (Pepcid) dosed at 0.25 mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours or omeprazole (Prilosec) dosed at 10 mg daily. Maverick needs to be fed not having eaten in so many days. You can make a gruel of whilte meat chicken (sans skin) and white rice and give it with a large eyedropper or small poultry baster placed between Maverick's cheek teeth and cheek. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

Thanks I will do the eye dropper feeding and stop the antibiotics.

You're quite welcome. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
