My dog has two...

My dog has two different auto immune diseases. presently it's the one that affects her skin. she has bee on prednisone for 4 months (20 mg per day). two weeks ago i tried stopping and in three days she developed three large sores on her back so i put her back on the red. my concern is about long term use

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your dog?

The last time the was on the med was a year ago for the other autoimmune disease which affects her temporal mastoid muscle. that time she was on red for four months.

I'm sorry to hear that your girl has suffered from two autoimmune diseases, and I completely understand your reluctance to have her on prednisone long term given the possible ramifications with the long term use of that drug.

It sounds like she had masticatory myositis which responded well to steroid (prednisone) use.

Unfortunately with some conditions we are stuck with long term use of prednisone because of the need to control the disease.

However I highly recommend that you speak to your veterinarian about using another immunosuppressive drug like azathioprine or cyclosporine along with, or instead of, prednisone to control her symptoms. That way you can lessen her dose of prednisone, yet possibly still control her symptoms. The best secondary drug will depend upon exactly which immunosuppressive disease she has.

Best of luck with your pup, please let me know if you have any further questions.
