She is having trouble...

She is having trouble with her back legs. She is 16.5 years old. She herniated a few discs in 2011. She was wobbly yesterday and today is really struggling. She is a pure bred border collie. Her eyes are cloudy, but she looks really sad! No tilting. Gums look good. Responds to her name. Just the legs.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the dog's name?

Maddie

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Maddie?

She is doing remarkably well for her age. This is the first real sign of her age. She has an abscessed tooth and is up for her annual in a month. The tooth will be dealt with after blood work. No other issues.

Is she on any anti-inflammatories?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Not at this time.

Well with herniated Discs anti-inflammatories are essential and also are prudent in 16 year old dog...

She had surgery for the discs. Is Rimadyl an anti inflammatory?

I would strongly recommend a vet visit and discuss with your vet getting your dog on daily meloxicam for the back problems along with gabapentin as needed starting at low dose and working up....

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Ok. In the meantime, can I do anything to make her more comfy?

how much does you dog weigh?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

38 lbs

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

You can give 1 1/2 tablets or 75 mg every 8 hours for pain...but see your vet soon....

Can I answer any other questions?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
We will go tomorrow. The emergency vet is also an option but I live on the third floor and I am not sure how we would get downstairs.
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Would ice or heat help?

So you can use ice pack with two towels below it.....(two layers)

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I would not do heat since this is acute flare up.....

Ok. Great.

if back legs get worse go to the ER....

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

can I answer any other questions?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Ok. Will do. It’s really expensive. And I don’t know how I would get her downstairs because I would have to carry her. It’s icy and we might fall. But I will try the ice.

Our Border Collie, about 13 years old, suddenly began to
Our Border Collie, about 13 years old, suddenly began to walk in a drunken fashion, vomit, eyes flicker and roll back in his head, pant, was very thirsty & distressed. A couple of years ago he just survived a paralysis tick, and has had worsening osteo arthritis ever since. We took him to the vet who said nothing about vestigular syndrome, but did say she's confident he has a problem in his brain, central nervous system, perhaps a major infection there. Because we live on an island she said we could take him to the mainland for treatment - which would cost thousands of $ we can't afford - she agreed that opting for euthanasia would be best. Our family is devastated by his sudden loss. Then I read tonight that maybe it was just old age vestigular syndrome. I don't know what to think! … read more
