My 9 yr old Dachshund has a rapidly growing malignant tumor in his mouth & neck ( lymph node ?) . Do you think Turmeric would help him to live longer ? We don't want chemo or radiation .

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Some lumps are serious and some aren't. Let's see what the Veterinarian has to say. What is the dog's name?

Duke . He had oral mass removed 7 weeks ago . Path report showed a rapidly replicating malignancy

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Duke?

No . He has been in good health except for dental issues. Mass was found when he went in for teeth cleaning

Thank you.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I am so sorry for Duke's diagnosis. While no one can predict how long you may be able to extend his life using turmeric, this spice does have a rather large scientific data base of in vitro & experimental animal studies showing some anticancer activity. At the very least, turmeric is very safe to give.

There does not seem to be one single dose recommendation, but most information available indicates extrapolating from what is labeled for people. One paper recommended giving 1 tablespoon daily to a large dog, another recommended 1 teaspoon per 50 pounds, so I would imagine 1/2 teaspoon is more than adequate for a Dachshund.

In addition, you can give FRESH minced garlic - about 1/2 clove per 20 pounds of body weight. Garlic may oxidize red blood cells & at significantly high doses, can produce a severe anemia, but the benefits, & the fact that garlic can improve taste, & thus appetite, make use of this herb worthwhile. If your veterinarian is alarmed by this, periodic CBCs to monitor Duke's blood can be performed.

I would also recommend a fish oil supplement ( Salmon or Menhaden ) using 500 - 600 mg of the DHA & EPA ( look at the labels for this info ) per 10 - 20 pound body weight daily.

I hope this makes sense & you find the information useful. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you.
