Hi I have a 13 week old Morkie and tonight we noticed she wouldn’t get up and was laying on the floor. She had peed and was just laying there. We picked her up and washed her. she has been arching her back and is having a hard time walking only her back legs

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name?

Ellie

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Ellie?

Nope we haven’t had any medical issues with her. She is very small teacup size.

Is she eating normally today?

When was the last time she ate?

She ate this morning and as normal. We typically only feed her once in the morning since she’s so small.

Ok thanks.

I would change the feeding schedule right away. These small breed and toy breed puppies have a hard time maintaining their blood glucose. I actually recommend feeding them 3-4 times daily vs twice daily. Once daily is definitely not enough. They have such a high metabolism and a low body fat content that they burn through calories quickly and they can get hypoglycemic if you don't provide frequent meals.

For now, you can rub some karo syrup (or honey, or maple syrup) on her gums. This allows a spike in the glucose that lasts ~ 5-10 minutes. You can follow that will a small meal to maintain the glucose. That should take care of this issue.

Here's a nice write up on the condition:

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
