My dogs bark seems...

My dogs bark seems hoarse and his breathing seems raspy when he has been playing or running. He has been to the vet and his lungs and trachea were clear and he has no fever. He had a small surgery about a month ago and had a bad reaction - vomiting- to the antibiotics.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your dog eat anything unusual?

He ate some peanuts in the shell and vomited the shells

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

His name is ***** ***** he is 7

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Rudy?

No he has been very healthy, his most recent blood work was normal

Hello I am Dr. Joey. Thanks for asking your question and trusting me to help you and your pet today. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 17 years of experience. I'm sorry to hear Rudy is hoarse with raspy-sounding breathing. These are probably related in that there could be something going on with his laryngeal folds (voice box).

Has he had these problems since right after his surgery/anesthesia or did they start later? Does he have any coughing?

He has not been coughing. I first noticed his hoarse bark about a week or so after the surgery.

It may or may not be related to the surgery. He may have contracted a bacterial infection, which means it might respond to antibiotics (if not already tried). It could be he had some residual swelling/irritation from the tube that placed for the anesthesia, but usually that type of irritation occurs within 24 hours after the procedure (so unlikely). He may have developed some laryngeal paralysis (partial, not complete) which can happen at random or rarely be associated with a procedure. If so, it might improve on its own or it may not. The only way to diagnose that is for your vet to look at his throat, which requires a light sedative.

Probably what may make the most sense is to have your veterinarian do an exam. See if there is anything obvious. If your vet feels it is important to view his throat then you can discuss this. Or, you may elect to do a trial with a medication.
