Customer Question
My dog has a yeast...
My dog has a yeast infection that the vet has not been able to keep under control with meds, even after having a skin test. I am desperate to help her. She smells awful and is itching horribly. My question is this:
She is between 55-65lbs. I have Cefdinir 300 mg which I would like to try giving her for the infection once daily, Promethazine 25mg for the itching, Ketoconazole 200 Mg for antifungal 1/2 pill daily, and doxycycline 100mg once daily. She has taken the antifungal and doxycycline previously. I am wanting to try the Cefdinir and promethazine in combination with them in order to get this infection under control. Would this be advisable?

I would do the following:

1) Cefdinir at 4.5 - 7 mg/lb (270 - 420 mg) once daily for 3-4 weeks and 1 week past clinical signs.

2) Ketoconazole at 2.3 - 4.5 mg/lb (140 - 270 mg) once daily for 4 weeks.

3) Promethazine at 0.1 - 0.23 mg/lb (6 - 14 mg) every 6 - 8 hours but please note that efficacy is poor for treating pruritis (itchiness). Acepromazine is a better choice.

4) I don't see the need for doxycycline if cefdinir is onboard. In addition, it's poorly tolerated often causing gastrointestinal distress.

5) Shampoo with a two-ingredient product such as one containing chlorhexidine and miconazole, ketoconazole, or clotrimazole. Malaseb is considered the best of these shampoos.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
