We were noticing with our 11 year old chihuana the following symptoms;distant, shivering, eyes are very watery, and up two days ago yelped when we tried to pick him up; has no energy. He's voiding and recently had a bowel movement which looked normal. In October he had a hernia and tumor repair that was repaired no cancer was detected at that time. Has no appetite either

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

He's does walk with a limp on his left leg but doesn't yelp when pressing in that area .he's had this condition since we had him. how can I get a temperature on him to see if he's runninga fever

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I'm sorry to hear of this with your Chihuahua. To answer you directly, any body thermometer introduced into his rectum 1.5" for 1 minute will give you his body temperature which should range between 100.5-102.5F. Regretfully, while important, his symptoms of being distant, shivering (a pain response, often), and epiphora (watery eyes) aren't pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder. Vocalizing when picked up, however, often indicates spinal pain such as would occur with intervertebral disk disease (a "slipped disk"). Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Thankyou I just went over to him and was pressing on his lower back and he yelped. Will be seeing his vet on Monday morning.

Ah! Well done. For now, aspirin dosed at 10 mg per pound with food at 12 hour intervals should be helpful. Please do your best to keep him a quiet as possible. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
