Customer Question
Dog has a bloated...

Dog has a bloated belly. Appears to have pain. Poor appetite. Shacks and walks back words sometime. This is the third day.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

I did not check her foot.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Dot

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Dot?

Not really. Jack Russel Mix. Gets nervous with fireworks from New Years. I know she pooped New Year's Eve.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Dot, please? How old is she?

A "bloated belly" can be effusive (full of free fluid), the result of organomegaly (enlargement of abdominal organs), or, least common, due to gaseous distension of Dot's gastrointestinal tract. Her vet will want to perform a complete physical exam and if it's evident that the bloating is caused by free fluid, a small sample of the fluid should be extracted and analyzed for its physical characteristics and cellularity. Effusions have many possible causes - right sided heart failure, a lack of albumin in the body - the large protein albumin is needed to keep fluid inside vessels and out of spaces such as the abdominal cavity - and inflammation in the abdomen due to infection or neoplasia (cancer).
