Is he showing any abnormal signs- lethargy, vomiting, difficulty walking?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
He appears to be walking. But whining now
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gary, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Ok good.

These used patches have a pretty small amount of Fentanyl on them. It doesn't take much to see toxic signs, but hopefully he'll do ok and not show any.

When we have toxicity, we see incoordination, falling over, muscle tremors, nausea. If you see those signs, then I would go to an ER vet. They have a reversal agent, Naloxone, that they can give. Usually one or two doses is all that is needed. Fentanyl is very short acting, so even the toxicity dogs only require treatment for a handful of hours.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

He had some difficulty walking after a few steps. I put him in water and he got more alert
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gary, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Ok good. It sounds like he's having some mild signs, but that should resolve on it's own without any treatment.

do I need to keep him awake or give him anything to drink
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gary, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

You don't have to keep him awake. You can offer food and water normally.
