Customer Question
My shar pei mixed...

My shar pei mixed dog has had a swollen back leg for almost 2 months now. She also has sores on the leg that she licks and makes worse. I took her to the vet and they gave her prednisone and antibiotics. She seemed to start getting better but as soon as I stop the medication it gets worse again and she licks it more. What can I do for her?

If both hocks were swollen, "fat hock" disease (amyloidosis) of Shar Peis is usually diagnosed. If that's not the case, that bump I see (and a smaller lesion above the lump) is likely to represent a mast cell tumor which secretes histamine causing the swelling you're seeing. Prednisone is usually effective in controlling the signs of mast cell tumors but isn't curative. Only removal of the tumor could be curative. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
