My 6 year old Bernese Lancelot has not been eating for a few…

Customer Question
My 6 year old...

My 6 year old Bernese Lancelot has not been eating for a few days. This has happened twice now, both times following a ten hour drive (we went home for the holidays). He ate normally after switching foods during the holidays but now following the drive home he has not eaten in nearly 48 hrs. What would you suggest?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name?

Lancelot

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Lancelot?

Not at all, he’s in entirely good health otherwise and is still acting quite normally. We we’re just outside and he’s been walk-in and playing in the snow.

I am sorry to hear about Lancelot's lack of appetite for the past several days, but pleased to hear that he seems bright and active in spite of not eating.

Lack of an appetite can be related to eating something he should not have, too many treats or table food, eating foreign material (which could cause a full or partial gastrointestinal obstruction), chronic pancreatitis, a dietary allergy or sensitivity, toxin exposure, a viral or bacterial infection, Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism), inflammatory bowel disease, or even infiltrative cancers such as lymphoma.

In some cases a very stressful event (car ride, different home, different rules, and now the adjustment back home) can lead to increased stomach acid production and acid reflux burns of the esophagus which can contribute to a poor appetite. But I would expect him to improve after a few days at home.

Because he hasn't eaten normally in several days and he is a middle aged fellow I am very concerned about him. If he isn't drinking well either he will quickly become dehydrated.

Ideally he would see a veterinarian if this continues on for more than 72 hours. Simple stomach upset should pass within 24 to 48 hours. They could examine him, run blood tests and possibly check radiographs and/or an ultrasound to evaluate him and know best how to treat him.

In the meantime they can administer injectable anti-nausea drugs and fluids to rehydrate him.

At home today to try and settle his stomach you can give either:

1) Pepcid ac (famotidine) at a dose of one 10mg tablet per 20 to 40 pounds of body weight every 12 hours

OR

2) Prilosec (omeprazole) at a dose of one 20mg tablet per 40 to 80 pounds of body weight every 24 hours

These are acid reducers and may help him feel less nauseous so that he will eat and drink. They are quite safe and can be used for several days if necessary.

A couple of hours after giving the acid reducer I recommend offering meat baby foods or a bland diet of 1/3 boiled, minced, white skinless chicken or boiled, lean hamburger and 2/3 boiled white rice mixed with some low salt chicken or beef broth to make it easy to lap up and swallow.

If he continues to not eat he should see his veterinarian for an examination, diagnostics and intravenous fluids and supportive care.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
