My 5 year old cocker gets diarrhea if she gets off her

Customer Question
My 5 year old...

My 5 year old cocker gets diarrhea if she gets off her special diet or if she is anxious. We give her Metronizadole. I usually have some on hand but I am out and our vet is not in today. She is not vomiting, she seems fine, but she does have runny stools and I want to try to keep this from getting worse. What can I do

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the cocker eat anything unusual?

I don't think so but she could have picked something up outside....she just has a really sensitive stomach.

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the cocker's name?

Annie

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Annie?

She does get diarrhea about every 3 months. I did give her Next guard yesterday. She is on a special Royal Canin HP diet.

Hi, I'm a licensed veterinarian and I'll be happy to help.

In a situation like this, my usual recommendation is to try pepto-bismol liquid or caplets (not the chewables.). If using the liquid, it's approximately 1mL per 10 pounds of body weight - or if using the caplets, approximately 1/2 tablet per 30 pounds of body weight. This is very safe and can be repeated every 8-12 hours if needed.

She weighs 18 lbs. What is that if I dispense by spoon?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Drew, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

A spoon is less than ideal, but a teaspoon holds 5mL, so approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of a teaspoon would be the estimated dose.

Note that a tablespoon holds much more (15mL) so be sure it's a teaspoon.
