Customer Question
She is a 9...

She is a 9 year-old Golden Retriever , and her estrus has never been this severe, nor this long in duration.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the dog?

We are concerned with the amount of blood. We have never seen it at even 20% of this level. I tried to get her to the vet hospital today, but they were closed until Tuesday. She is somewhat lethargic.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

We are just alarmed over the amount of blood, that we have never experienced before. She hasn't had an estrus that was even noticeable for around 2 years.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. When was her last heat period, please? My primary concern is that she may not be in heat but, instead, suffering from a purulent endometriosis (pyometra) which arises 1-3 months after a heat period. Alternatively, you're seeing a normal variation in a heat period. Proestrus - the initial stage of heat - can last up to 17 days and estrus - when she would stand for a male - can last up to 21 days. In both stages, bleeding can be copious. Finally, she may have cystic ovaries at this time.
