Can you clarify for me if Blue is thrusting her tongue in and out repeatedly, or, instead, is licking her face, inanimate objects, and perhaps people? Is Blue currently being administered any drugs?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
No drugs now. Licking is just sticking his tongue out and 'licking' it back in, no hurry, but continuous when he is doing it. Cannot identify any precipitating events; not after eating, chewing bone, etc.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Thank you. I need you to carefully look inside Blue's oral cavity for foreign material stuck between his teeth, evidence of dental disease (erythema/redness, swelling), or mucous membrane changes. If you can't identify these things, consider gastrointestinal distress in the form of cramping, nausea, or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD, acid reflux, heartburn) which might be addressed with an over the counter antacid such as famotidine (Pepcid) dosed at 0.25 mg per pound of body weight at 12 hour intervals. Please let me know what you find.

Thank you; vet examined Blue after he had started licking [for a different problem] and commented on how good his teeth looked, so I don't think that's the problem. Will try antacid. Problem is a nuisance, not a health problem, but I would like to get it solved.Thanks. KEH
