Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Bandit swallowed at least 3/4 of an iron pill (10.5 mg). I can help you with this. Please give me a moment to calculate the potential for toxicity. I will return shortly.

Dog Veterinarian: Scott Perry, Dog Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Thank you for your patience. Bandit swallowed a dose of approximately 1 mg/kg. The potential for toxicity is at approximately 25 mg/kg. Therefore, the risk for any issues associated with iron toxicity are very low. Upset stomach (i.e. vomiting, diarrhea) are observed at the lowest levels of toxicity, but again, this would be expected at much higher doses. If you do observe this then treatment is with anti-nausea medications and a low fat diet. A decent over-the-counter medication for nausea that can be used for dogs is Pepcid. Bandit's dose is 1/2 tablet (i.e. 5 mg) every 12 hours.
