I have a two year old dog who has had diarrhea since the afternoon on thursday

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the 2 year old?

Shes had diarrhea since Thursday afternoon. We've switched her to a diet of plain chicken and rice which she's been eating right up. She wasn't drinking water until I poured chicken broth in it. She's still a little playful--maybe a little less. It's hard to tell if her mood has changed at all because already a pretty lazy dog. She doesn't seem like she's in pain. But she is going to the bathroom every couple hours

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the 2 year old's name?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

What does the diarrhea look like? Any blood?

Are her gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

If you press on her belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain?

Could she have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human meds, etc)?

Her diarrhea has no blood. It is either watery or very soft and look mucus-y. Gums are pink, her mouth feels like it might be a little dry. She doesn't seem like she's in pain. We keep her in our room while we're away and don't have much in there. She does have bones that she chews on but they look like they're intact

Hello again,

Now I am glad to see its not bloody nor black as that does let us exclude more severe causes for this loose stool. Though if this has persisted for a few days despite the light diet, we do need to tread with care as this suggests more than a benign gut upset. Instead, it does raise concerns of a bacterial, viral, protozoal or possibly parasitic cause for the diarrhea.

With this in mind, we can try to step up the supportive care to see if we can get Sophie more settled. First, if her gums are a bit dry, do encourage her to keep drinking as that is an early stage sign of dehydration. As well, if she has not been wormed recently that too would be a base to cover. Otherwise, to help normalize her stools, you can add fiber (ie canned pumpkin) and OTC probiotics (ie Benebac, Fortiflora) to her meals. As well, if she is very loose, then we can use a pet safe anti-diarrheal. As I am sure you appreciate, these would not be a cure for infectious issues; but it can still be of benefit. It will reduce diarrhea load, allow the body to absorb more water/nutrients, and soothe the upset gut. In regards ***** ***** options, the one we most commonly use is Kaolin/Kaopectate (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/kaolin-and-pectin-kapectolin-k-p)). This is available OTC at most pharmacies. Otherwise, Propectalin, Canikur, Fast Balance, and Protexin Pro-Fiber (all OTC at vets, pet stores, and even Amazon) would be another option. All will slow diarrhea and those last ones have the added bonus of probiotics added in. And if we can get her settled with those over the weekend, we are happy. Though if this lingers, then it'd be worth having a stool sample tested by her vet to check for the above as we may need her on further treatment (ie antibiotics, anti-protozoal, etc) to nip this in the bud.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
