Hello! My 8 month old, 90 pound rottweiler ate a very small, thin ziploc bag with about 6 liver treats in it, about 3 hours ago

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name?

I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

Can you give me the measurements in inches of that very small bag?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I’d say about 6 inches x 3 inches, just the small snack size
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

Thank you. A 90 lb dog shouldn't have any difficulty passing that through its gastrointestinal tract. Although unlikely, obstruction of the small intestine is evidenced by persistent vomiting and/or anorexia and should prompt the attention of Mase's vet. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

Is it too late being 4 hours ago to induce vomiting? He pretty much downed it with no struggle and is still being his normal self
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

His stomach should have passed it into the small intestine by now. I don't believe that inducing emesis is necessary but you can do so by dosing with 45 mL (3 measuring tablespoons) of 3% hydrogen peroxide. He should vomit within 15 minutes. If not, you can repeat the same dose.

would you encourage at this point for me to induce vomiting or to wait for it to pass? Is there anything to help it pass faster, ex. Pumpkin?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

I would simply monitor him only. Yes, adding psyllium seed (Metamucil) at a dose of one tablespoon per the next three wet food meals can act as a bulk laxative and move it along. Canned pumpkin can act similarly. There's no specific dose of canned pumpkin. He would probably enjoy a full can of it.

You're quite welcome. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
