Customer Question
I have a 7...

I have a 7 year old Maltese. Her hair has started thinning along her back and on her tail.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is wrong with the dog?

She is otherwise healthy. She takes a flea preventative and isn't scratching or chewing.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Using the wrong medication for fleas can be dangerous. You should definitely talk to the Veterinarian. What is the dog's name?

Her name is*****: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Daisy?

She is also getting brownish black splotches on her skin - Mostly on her back and tummy.

Her skin is also a bit dry and flaky. the hair thinning is symmetric, btw. It is not thinning in patches.

It sounds like she may have a condition called hypothyroidism. This occurs in dogs just like it does in people. It can drastically affect the hair growth on a pet and the normal skin turnover. We often see hair thinning, blackheads forming, and skin discoloration in pets with this disease.

Other causes for hair thinning and skin discoloration is an overgrowth of normal skin mites ( in the deep layers of the skin)

I would recommend getting a thyroid panel done to check to see if Daisy is hypothyroid, a skin cytology to check for infections and a skin scraping to look for overgrowth of skin mites.

Hypothyroidism is very treatable with thyroid hormone supplementation for the remainder of her life. Most hair regrows within 1-2 months.

Overgrowth of skin mites ( also known as Demodex) is also very treatable with specific flea and tick medications ( nexgard or bravecto are two very good ones in use now)
