He has this unusual infection on his bumb

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

I will just check for you

Veterinarian's Assistant: Maybe I'm confused. I thought you had a problem with a pet. Is that correct?

YES

Veterinarian's Assistant: There are all sorts of infections the animal can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the's name and age?

Pati is his name and he is 8 years old the breed im not too sure he is a mixed breed

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Pati?

He seems to be loosing fur in some parts of his body. He is a rhodesian ridgeback cross with a bullmastiff

I'm sorry to hear of this with Pati. Can you upload a photo(s) of this "unusual infection on his (sic) bum" to our conversation? You can upload photos by using the paperclip or add file icon in the toolbar above your message box (if you can see those icons on your particular device) or you can use an external app such as dropbox.com/ Please check that the photo(s) is in focus prior to uploading it.

I suspect that Pati has been licking excessively at that area. The photo is a bit out of focus but I believe that I see skin thickening suggesting that that area has been "annoyed" by him for quite some time. His vet needs to perform a cytology - microscopic exam of a small sample of affected skin surface - looking for excessive numbers of both bacteria and yeast (Malassezia) and then treat specifically for those infections. Because he's losing fur in other parts of his body, a bacterial skin infection (pyoderma) is most likely. This is treated with an antibiotic in the cephalosporin class such as cephalexin for a minimum of 3-4 weeks and 1 week past clinical signs. Shampooing Pati twice weekly in a shampoo containing either chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide should hasten resolution of the infection. You can find these shampoos over the counter or at Pati's vet hospital. If yeast is found, the prescription drug ketoconazole should be prescribed to be given daily for a month and the same shampoos can be used. Applying a prescription antibacterial/antiyeast ointment to the area should be helpful but I have to wonder how long Pati would leave anything you applied to his skin. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
