Hello - I have...

Hello - I have a 9 year old Basset she has loose stool and has pain - wondering if I can give her low dose Bayer asprin for now. I believe she has an infection

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. There are all sorts of infections the Basset can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the Basset's name?

Maggie

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Maggie?

No not really

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

Now if Maggie has diarrhea, we cannot use Aspirin (or anti-inflammatories in general) as they can worsen GI signs. Instead, we'd need to address the loose stools. To do so, we can start small meals of a light/easily digestible diet. Examples you can use are cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). There are also OTC vet diets that can be used (ie Hill’s I/D or Royal Canin’s sensitivity) too. Fiber and OTC probiotics (benebac, fortiflora) can be added to these meals to support digestion and firm stools.

If she is very loose, then you can consider trying a pet safe anti-diarrheal. As I am sure you appreciate, these would not be a cure if this is infectious; but it can still be of benefit. It will reduce diarrhea load, allow the body to absorb more water/nutrients, and soothe the upset gut. In regards ***** ***** options, we most often use OTC Kaolin/Kaopectate (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/kaolin-and-pectin-kapectolin-k-p). Otherwise, Propectalin, Canikur, Fast Balance, and Protexin Pro-Fiber (all available OTC at vets, pet stores, and even Amazon) would be another option. All will slow diarrhea and those last ones have the added bonus of providing support to the delicate good GI bacteria. So, these can be used as a short-term means of soothing this upset GI.

Overall, a wide range of agents could trigger the signs we are seeing. Infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, or parasites) could cause this but also dietary indiscretion. Therefore, we’d want to start supportive care to settle this If she is very sore (a blockage concern) or doesn’t respond to the above within 12-24 hours; then we'd want to get her vet involved. They can assess her hydration, rule out fever, make sure there is nothing in her stomach that shouldn't be there or any sinister viruses present. Depending on their findings, your vet can treat her with gut safe pain relief and antibiotics to get her back feeling like herself.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
