My dog just gave...

My dog just gave birth to 7 puppies (Great Dane) this was planned we had her X-rays done to make sure we knew how many she was having. My vet said 8 possibly 9. We’ve got 7 it’s been an hour and a half since the last one. She had a lot of fluid come out and still seems like she wants to push but she’s tired. Should we be concerned. Super worried Mom

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help your puppy. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your puppy?

No she’s healthy

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I am sorry to hear you are worried about your Great Dane. I am so glad you had an Xray so that you know how many puppies to expect.

If she had 7 and is still trying to push, she may need help to give birth to the last one (or two!). We usually give an injection of oxytocin, a hormone to increase the strength of contractions, along with an injection of calcium, and that may be all she needs to push out these last pups.

Is there an emergency vet open near you today?

there is

Then I would call them and take her there. Worst case, she may need a C section, but there is a good chance that a couple of injections will get these last puppies to be born alive.

We just delivered puppy number 8 and we are watching for any more contractions. Thank you so much for answering so promptly. We have been up for 31 hours so we may be a bit over tired and anxious.

That is fantastic! So glad you had that Xray, and know she is done. Hope everyone gets some much needed rest!

You are welcome.
