Customer Question
My la puppy, seven...

My la puppy, seven months old, ate most of a tube of mantra diaper rash ointment. He has vomited three times and is lethargic and really not feeling himself. Wondering if I should watch it for a while or take him to the vet immediately

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the puppy?

Up to this point he has been super happy and playful although he does eat everything he can get ahold of

Hello and welcome! I am Dr. Christina, a licensed veterinarian, here to help answer your questions. You are inquiring about your dog who ate an entire tube of diaper rash cream, is that correct?

he is a lab seven months old

I am so glad you are here. Diaper rash cream contains zinc oxide. If he ate the whole tube, this amount of zinc can be incredibly toxic leading to lysis or breaking up of his red blood cells. This can be life-threatening.

Did he eat it within the past hour?

I would recommend to take him to the vet. He may be experiencing the stomach upset side effects as you describe, but the latter side effects to his red blood cells can be bad.

No he did not I am at work, which is the reason I did not just run him to the vet so what should l look for that would tell me to go now as opposed to waiting to see if it resolves itself
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Christina, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

If his red blood cells lyse up, he will become very anemic and this will make him very lethargic. He will need multiple blood transfusions. Taking him there now they can give him medications to help bind it up in his intestines (what of it he has not absorbed yet) and IV medications to bind it up so it does not cause lysis of the red blood cells.

If his red blood cells have not started to lyse (break apart) they may be able to prevent it from happening with medications. This is why I would take him now, rather than waiting for him to get worse.
