Customer Question
We have an 8...

We have an 8 year old and a 3.5 year old golden retriever. Everybody gets along well. We have a large dog door open to the outside 24/7, and a good sized yard. Our 3.5 year old has been house trained and doing well for over 3 years. Suddenly, during the night, he finds places inside the house to pee on the floor. He is a wonderful dog, just a bit demanding for attention. If any one shows any attention to the older dog the young one jumps in and wants love also. He is a bit more affectionate in that he is a licker (licks me most any chance he gets) and sleeps in our bed pressed so hard against me he almost forces me over the edge.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name?

I didn't quite finish my story but the issue is "Jack" has started leaving us a yellow puddle somewhere in the house every night and I don't know how to solve this.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

Other than he is vet healthy, no.

I am sorry to hear that Jack is having nighttime urinary accidents inside.

When a previously well house trained dog suddenly starts urinating in the house, it is often a sign of physical problem. The first thing to do is to rule out a UTI, urinary tract infection. Taking a sample of his urine to your veterinarian is the first thing I would do if he were mine.

If the urine sample is normal, then he has to be retrained. Wherever he is having these indoor accidents has to be off limits to him at night. He needs to be confined, so that he does not have access to running free in the house and urinating. Do not confine him until you are sure this is not a UTI, however. If he has a UTI, he can't help himself going.
