My 16 year old Scotty was recently diagnosed with liver

Customer Question
My 16 year old...

My 16 year old Scotty was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. He is very thirsty, but not eating regular dog food. Seems to be sleeping more(medication related?) and when do I know it will be time to let go?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. It could be an infection. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

Macgregor. He had ultrasound which showed cancer with mets.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Macgregor?

Just that he is a wonderful little dog

I'm sorry to hear of this with Macgregor. His quality of life will be the key to knowing when it's time to have the final kindess performed. One of the great pleasures of dogs - their appetite - will wane; in general, three consecutive days of anorexia tells me that it's time. He may demonstrate a change in his normal behavior - a normally social dog becoming reclusive or, conversely, a normally aloof dog becoming "clingy". You may see signs of pain - eyes half-closed, shaking/trembling, panting, vocalizing, anxiety, agitation, restlessness. Please consider a potent narcotic analgesic as part of his hospice. His vet can prescribe tramadol, morphine, or buprenorphine. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
