I am sorry to hear you are worried about Brutus. I just came online and saw your question; I am sorry you have been waiting for an answer.

If this is an ACL tear, it should be treated since he is a large dog. There are treatment options: prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, stem cell therapy, surgery.

I would first have a veterinarian determine if this is an ACL, and get some good pain drugs for him, such as anti inflammatory medication, and pain medication like tramadol.

You can try aspirin until you can get something more effective; how much does he weigh?

150 lbs it only seems to hurt him after he lays down for a while it doesn't seem to be a constant pain. But when he gets up and it bothers he whines and shakes
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

He really should see a veterinarian and get a diagnosis. If it is an ACL tear, and is not treated, it could happen in his other leg and then he would really have trouble getting around.

You could give him up to 500 or 600 mg of aspirin, twice daily, with food. Do not give Advil or Aleve. If he vomits, do not repeat it.
