Customer Question
My 2.5 yr old...

My 2.5 yr old dog, Ruby, has for the last 7-10 days had 3-5 short "cough/gag" incidents, with nothing coming up. A few days prior to short cough/gag onset, she was playing/chewing on a short, 1/2" diameter tree branch drop, which I took away from her as soon as I could (1-2 mins). I've twice run 2 fingers as deep as I could down her throat, finding nothing...?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Coughing can be worrying. The Expert will know what you should do. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Ruby?

I adopted her from RescueMe group late December last year. She is up to date on on all vacs, etc, but was put on heartworm meds by me early this spring... no record of her having HW preventative prior to my getting her.

Does it seem to be coughing or gagging? It is important to determine if the issue is with the gastrointestinal tract verses the respiratory tract. The respiratory tract would be coughing. G.I. tract would be retching or vomiting or regurgitating.

Does she have any nasal drainage or sneezing?

Does she have any changes in appetite or trouble swallowing?

Very short 2-3 second cough (like trying to clear throat) followed by even shorter 'gag'. Never any vomiting or regurgitating anything.
No nasal drainage or sneezing.
No changes in appetite or trouble swallowing.

Thank you,

I have a fe over the counter treatment ideas.

Normally if there is something stuck in the throat they will act painful, or move away, when you squeeze up and down the throat. Something stuck in the throat would also make it tough to swallow food or water. It can cause lots of salivation as well because they can not swallow as usual.

Maybe she scratched her esophagus with the stick. Try giving her human over the counter Pepcid AC. It comes in 10mg tablets. Give 1/4 of a tablet per each 15 pounds of dog every 12 hours for at least a week.

That will reduce any excess stomach acid and help if there is excess acid refluxing into her throat.

Soften her food with low sodium broth or warm water for the next week. You could also put her on a bland diet of plain cooked chicken and cooked rice. Something that would be easier to swallow and more gentle on her throat than dry kibble.

If she starts to have nasal drainage, or starts coughing more, she may have a chest cold or viral bronchitis. But that would include more respiratory signs.

There should be an improvement in her gagging in 48 hours with the Pepcid and bland diet.

It would be a good idea to make a vet appointment for her on Friday or Saturday. Just so you have an appointment if you need one. You can always cancel it if she improves.

If she improves with the soft diet and Pepcid, continue that for a week, and she should be better after that.

Did that make sense?

Do you have any other questions I may assist you with?
