Customer Question
He has epilepsy and...

He has epilepsy and I want to get him off phenobarbital and try cbd oil. He is going down hill since on phenobarbital.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is the dog's name and age?

Domino and he is 5 1/2 years old. A toy poodle.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Domino?

He was a rescue from Mexico. I have had him since he was 4 weeks old. He is allergic to vaccinations. He now has the fly snapping since put on the liquid form. He weighs around 13 lbs and is taking 16.2 units twice a day. He has started shaking for no known reason.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. Phenobarbital needs to be tapered slowly over a couple of weeks lest withdrawal seizures arise. That can be done by giving half the dose (8.1 mg) twice daily for 5 days, then 1/4 the dose (4 mg) twice daily for 5 days, then the 4 mg once daily for 5 days and then stop administration. The CBD oil should be initiated prior to tapering. Future research and experience will give us more information on dosing levels and intervals. Current recommendations for oral dosing of CBD in dogs and cats are 0.02 to 0.1 mg/kg daily. For help in dosing please see this link I found on the net: http://hawthornevet.com/resources/medicinal-cannabis-pets

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
