Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

How long has she been showing signs?

Did her vet see her for these signs? What tests were done?

Any retching, gagging, lip licking, drooling, or vomiting?

Are her gums pink, yellow tinted, or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

If you press on her belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain? Does it feel firm or fluidy?

no test he said he thought it was fluid
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. B., Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Oh dear,

That isn't good news to hear they feel it is fluid. This is because at Daisey's age we can see fluid build up in the abdomen for a range of reasons.

We can see this with internal bleeds (hopefully less likely), but also with infection (if there has been a GI perforation or wound through the skin), related to kidney issues, liver troubles, and if a dog has low blood proteins As well, it can be a feature of heart disease (especially a concern with her behaviour as well) and cancer. So, we do have some real concerns and either want her back to her vet ASAP or to another local vet. Ideally we'd want them to ultrasound to confirm it is fluid and potentially take a sample for analysis. At the same time, they can listen to her heart and check bloods to look for those other worries. Depending on their findings, she can be started on treatment to reduce the fluid present but also to address the underlying cause to keep her comfortable and help get her as back to normal as we can.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
