My dog is not...

My dog is not eating, is constipated, and has a bulge on his left side. He is a golden retriever and 11 years old. He is also drinking excessively and wants to stay outside, even though it is 18 degrees out. He also has been taking thyroid medicine for the last 4 years. Any suggestions on what may be wrong?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Problems with drinking can be serious. I'm glad you noticed it. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

His name is***** had his annual checkup a month ago. All his blood work came back good. The swelling on his left side just started getting bigger last night.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Rufus?

He was diagnosed with very low thyroid hormone 4 years ago and has been on medication for it since then. At his checkup last month, his thyroid hormones were once again very low, so the vet increased his medication. He has acted like his normal self until a couple of days ago.

Good morning!

Dr. Paul Brazzell here

Can you give me more details on that bulge? Is he trying to vomit? Painful?

Are gums pink?

How long has he been drinking more?

Paul

No, he is not trying to vomit at all. He has not eaten his dog food for a few days. He was still eating his treats until this morning. My husband cooked him a 2 oz. steak this morning, and he ate it---no problem. I noticed him trying to have a bowel movement a little while ago. Nothing came out. He does not have any pain. His gums are a dark pink. I just really noticed the bulge this morning. I can feel it on his left side and it looks like his left side is hanging lower than his right. It is not just a lump; it feels like it is some internal organ swelling. And he has been drinking excessive amounts of water since Wednesday (2 days ago).

No. I would rather keep texting instead of talking on the phone.

Thanks

And sorry about the BOTS- so annoying!

I am worried about an enlarged spleen

Unfortunately this is a very common problem in older large breed dogs

I dont have to do this often but in light of the clinical signs and that possible mass he needs to be examined

They should check his red blood cell count (again) and do an abdominal ultrasound

Make sense?
