Customer Question
I took her to...

I took her to our vet because she was drinking a lot of water and wasn't eating well. He said she has lost about 40% of kidney function. We have put her on a prescription diet for kidney disease. I would like to know if she will perk up with this new diet or still always be very slugish

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name and age?

Chloe. She is 6. A springer spaniel

That is a tough question to answer. If she is sluggish because of her reduced kidney function then the prescription diet can help her feel better and that may make her less sluggish. How long has she been on the new diet?

Thank you, ***** ***** too soon to tell if it will help her energy level. I would give it two weeks to help.

If she is still sluggish two weeks from now then the diet will probably not help her energy levels.

Does that help? Do you have any other questions I may assist you with?

Hi, I saw your other question about her not eating at all. I have some ideas. To help keep her blood sugar up rub some honey on her gums every 2 hours. If she is totally refusing to eat the prescription kidney diet for three days try feeding her something else she likes. She needs to eat. Once she is eating a food she likes, gradually start to mix in her prescription diet. Start with just a spoonful of the new diet and add a spoonful more each day.

She may have an upset stomach from her kidney disease. It can cause an increase of acid in the stomach.

If she is not already on an stomach acid reducer try 10 mg Pepcid Ac tablets. 1/4 of a 10mg Pepcid AC tablet per each 10 pounds of dog every 12 hours. Pepcid Ac is an over the counter stomach acid reducer.

If that was helpful, can you please rate my answers by clicking on the stars? That lets the website know I have responded to your question. That way I will receive credit for my work. Many Thanks
