8 year old, healthy male Great Dane. 205 lbs. Sleeps in bed…

Customer Question
8 year old, healthy...

8 year old, healthy male Great Dane. 205 lbs. Sleeps in bed with us and usually nudges me to go out to potty if necessary when I’m asleep. He has failed to sleep much at all tonite and isn’t ‘asking’ to go outside, but pooped on the floor almost as if to not bother me. He’s since been taken outside several times and just won’t go back to sleep. Stomach was surgically pinned when he was neutered at 2 yrs. Overall acting odd, laying on the floor and not getting back in bed. Gums appear normal and pink. No vomiting or diarrhea. Just overall listless and more ‘clingy’ to me throughout the night. Very odd behavior. Oh, and diet has been consistent. No idea what’s going on, but I know this boy like he’s an extension on me and can tell something isn’t right. Any ideas or input is appreciated.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

Indoor dog. No other animals in the house. No prior medical issues.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on your dog, please? Regretfully, his behavior isn't pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder.

Please check his respiratory rate at rest or while asleep for me. It should be less than 30 breaths per minute at those times. Please take his rectal temperature. Any body thermomenter will do when placed 1.5" into his rectum for 1 minute. Normal is 100.5 - 102.5F. Please let me know what you find.
