Hello! I have an 8 year old labrador who is in Kidney failure. He has been eating Hills K/D for 18 months since his diagnosis but has since stopped eating both the dry and wet versions. He is losing weight and looks famished. What would be a good alternative to the Hills K/D food? Is there another prescription dog food I can try or should I instead cook real meals?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the dog's name?

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand LeBron is no longer eating the Hill's k/d food. Have you had his values rechecked recently? There are other food options that can work, but you may want to first determine if he is not eating because he is feeling nauseous or he is simply not liking the food anymore.

I have not had a blood test performed recently. Would that be a good place to start before making a switch?
Dog Veterinarian: Scott Perry, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

A blood test would be recommended to make sure the disease has not progressed and nausea is the reason why he is not eating well. Regarding other foods you can feed, there is a Hill's h/d that is used for heart disease, but it has a similar nutrition profile such as low protein, low sodium, etc. You can feed that as well. Also, there are over-the-counter options such as home cooking meals for LeBron. I recommend to use a veterinary nutritionist website in constructing a recipe such as balanceit.com. On the left hand side you will want to pick the option "Free Autobalancer EZ for Vet Patients. Then select Kidney Disease on the next menu. I hope that helps.
