Customer Question
My 80lb Lab ate...

My 80lb Lab ate a 14oz bar of dark chocolate with almonds at roughly 10:30 am. She is drinking a lot and seems restless and has a distended abdomen. Is there something I should be doing for her? She’s had no vomiting or diarrhea.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name and age?

Bailey and she’s 8 yrs old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Bailey?

No....she just went for her annual check up last week and she is healthy 😊

I'm sorry to hear that Bailey isn't feeling well after her indulgence. Was this a standard dark chocolate bar or a higher cocoa content (60-85%)?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Dog Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Even if she ate standard dark chocolate, Bailey unfortunately ingested a significantly toxic dose of chocolate.

Symptoms at this dose of chocolate include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, tremors and seizures.

Since it has been approximately 12hrs since her ingestion of the chocolate, inducing her to vomit will likely not remove any chocolate from her system. I recommend taking her to the nearest emergency facility this evening to receive activated charcoal. This is a special medication that will absorb the toxic compounds from the chocolate in her system and reduce the amount that she absorbs.
