My dog, an approximately 5 year old shiba inu was throwing up and shaking at times this am. Took him out for his usual morning walk. He had normal bowel movement and urintion but didn't want to walk as far as normal he started to head home and threw up

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your dog?

Hes very sleepy now but hasn't thrown up since this morning. He's only drinken some water all day and didn't throw up after

He was shaking and whining this morning too. He has gotten up to greet a couple of family members who've come home. Seems to be doing a little better. He's not limping so no leg injuries.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
He's been burping a lot lately too.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
He just went the bathroom for the first time since this morning. Has diarrhea. Hasn't eaten today. Walked fine on his walk though.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on your dog, please?

Regretfully, his gastrointestinal distress isn't pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder. In most cases, if my patient is stable, I'll withold food for 24 hours but leave water down unless drinking induces more vomiting at which time I'll replace the water with ice cubes for my patient to lick. After the fast, his regular food can be offered and we then watch to see if he's appetent and, if so, if eating induces more vomiting or diarrhea. Avoid oral drugs at this time as well.

He hasn't thrown up since this morning and had the bout of diarrhea about 3 hours ago on his walk. After his walk he wanted to sit in the yard. He was alert but he just lay in one spot for a while-unusual, he also did this earlier in the afternoon. The temps here are in the 30's. The past couple of hours he has been sleeping rather soundly in the same spot-unusual for him sleep soundly while the family is awake and moving, and he usually follows us around, my kids covered him in a blanket and he seems comfortable despite being out of sorts.

Sorry this took so long. He seems to be feeling better, a little more active. Still hasn't eaten anything but is drinking water. Went on his morning walk, no bowel movement, which he always has in morning, but again he hasn't eaten. Ran into another dog/owner who said his dog hadn't been feeling well past few days. Perhaps something going around? My dog likes to lick urine spots of other dogs.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

I'm not as concerned about his caloric intake as I am his fluid intake. He's drinking and so keeping himself hydrated so you can continue to monitor at this time. Licking non infected urine of other dogs shouldn't be harmful. Licking urine of small mammals, however, risks the bacterial infection leptospirosis.

I was looking to ask a veterinarian a question. I see you are a veterinarian assistant. Can I speak with a vet? I am going to take my puppy Leo to our vet tomorrow, hopefully if I can get in. Leo is a 8 month old Biewer Terrier. If you do not know what that is, he is from the Yorkshire terrier. For the past two nights he has thrown up his dinner about an hour after eating. Note: I have noticed for some time he burps pretty much overtime he finishes eating. He does not throw everything up. I am concerned because I googled, and read about food not making it to the stomach. He is fine in every other way. We had just come back from a long walk today when he threw up and also yesterday, not sure if that is related. Note: His stool has been normal, however today on our walk he took one normal formed and brown poop, but then went a second time and the stool was smaller, thin and yellow. I am worried … read more
